Ocean Journeys

One of BC’s defining features is its stunning coastline, and seeing some of that coastline from the water is a not-to-be-missed experience. There are a number of ways to do this, anything from paddling a kayak in a sheltered bay or among the remote islands of an offshore archipelago, to cruising in comfort aboard a BC ferry or a luxury cruise liner along the incomparable Inside Passage route. Other options include sailboat excursions, or trips aboard a working coastal freighter.

During the summer, dozens of waterfalls cascade down the fjord’s sheer walls. The jewel in the crown is Chatterbox Falls, a year-round torrent at the head of the inlet.

Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary

One of the best places in the world to see grizzly bears in their natural habitat is this seaside sanctuary northeast of Prince Rupert. The first area in Canada to be protected specifically for grizzly bears, Khutzeymateen is accessible only by boat (or boat and floatplane). Home to about 50 bears, it is best visited between May and July (especially in May) when the bears can be seen roaming the shore. There is no land access in the Sanctuary, and the river estuary is only accessible with a licensed tour operator.
